Stay Alert, Speak Up

Total Massage And Bodywork

Massage therapy should always feel safe, professional, and respectful—but sometimes, it doesn’t. We’ve heard troubling stories about therapists crossing boundaries, whether through uncomfortable comments, unprofessional behavior, or actions that just don’t feel right.

Some move from spa to spa, leaving a trail of uneasy clients who often hesitate to speak up. Others operate as “lone wolf” practitioners, setting up in single-room office parks or offering mobile services (coming to your home).

Many of these independent therapists may have been pushed out of legitimate spas due to ethics violations, operational issues, or even substance abuse problems—red flags that make them unhirable by reputable businesses. In our experience, the majority of these independent practitioners raise serious concerns due to the lack of oversight, with only a small minority appearing trustworthy.

You might notice warning signs like a therapist pushing personal business cards during sessions, making odd remarks about a “connection,” or worse—behavior that feels inappropriate. Some have even been mentored by individuals who lost their licenses for serious misconduct, such as sexual assault during a session (check public records on the Virginia Department of Health Professions website for examples). Don’t ignore your instincts.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is.
  • Speak up where you can. If you’re at a spa, tell the business so they can act. If you’re dealing with an independent therapist, proceed with extra caution—there’s no management to report to, which can make these situations riskier.
  • Report to the state. In Virginia, the Board of Nursing oversees massage therapists. If you’ve experienced or witnessed misconduct, file a complaint here: File a Complaint with the Virginia Department of Health Professions. You can also call 804-367-4515 for guidance.

Your voice matters. Speaking up can protect others and stop harmful patterns. Stay vigilant—your safety comes first.
